Temple of Poseidon
At the southernmost point of Attica at Cape Sounio, lies the Temple of Poseidon within a fort that protects the coast of Attica. Made entirely of white marble, it was built in the middle of the 5th century BC in order to honor Poseidon, god of the sea, while many of its original columns are still standing. A Doric temple, it overlooks the sea at the end of Cape Sounion, at a height of almost 60 metres (200 ft). As the sun melts into the horizon the temple is tinted in shades of blue, red and orange, a sight that will truly take your breath away. A poetic setting for romantic escapes it will become one of life’s most treasured moments.
